My Capstone Research Study

Attack Angle Research Study

Hi! This is my blog for my senior STEM capstone project. In order to graduate from the Forsyth Central STEM Academy, students must participate in either in an internship or capstone project. While I had two internships lined up, both ended up not working out due to my school schedule and COVID-19. Our capstone projects have to focus on something we are passionate about and require us to apply the skills and knowledge we have learned through our pathway. In case you haven't seen my other pages, I kinda really love baseball. I am also finishing the engineering pathway, which mean by the end of April, I will have taken four years' worth of AP Physics. I guess you could say I have learned a little bit of physics here and there over the course of the last three years. Anyways, I spent hours and hours trying to find some sort of study that I could do for baseball that hasn't already been done a million other times before coming up with my study. I am wrapping up my project this week and I am so excited! I haven't been doing a great job at updating this blog as I have been finishing data collection, but when I am done with the project, I will make sure to post the paper and presentation here! I am the first senior to present my capstone on...

I had him start using the sensor again a week or two ago and I am so happy to say I have officially collected over 2/3s of all of my data! Double yay!! I was able to wrap up collecting data for pitches low in the strike zone, meaning I got enough data for all low and inside pitches...

Since my last post, I have collected a whole lot more data than usual! When we got back from the Perfect Game 14u WWBA in Hoover, Alabama, we went back to work and tried to collect more data for low and middle. However, for some reason, All of his swings were beyond me restraint, so I decided to switch things...

Hey! So the past 2 weeks I have been trying to make these posts scheduled so they automatically post on Fridays, but I had a few people telling me that they weren't seeing anything. I'm sorry for the 2 posts not uploading. It looks like I am just going to have to do it all on here the day of. ...

As you can see, I have finally collected enough data to make a graph that has some correlation, but it is still not enough to move onto the next area of the strike zone. Alex's baseball practices have started and its hard for us to find a time to collect data. I'm just glad that I'm able to collect something at this point! ...

If you read my last post, you know I encountered my first real problem since starting this project. I was torn and couldn't decide what I was going to do, so I decided to just take a few days off without the tracker and see if he can get where I needed him to be without having to change...

After this week, I'm kinda torn about this project. So Alex's batting lessons have started up again and after a few of them, they have started "reinventing" his swing. So while he is doing so, he is hitting with less power which messes with the results. At this point, I don't know whether I should just set different parameters...

This week was a crazy week for me! I have been crazy busy with preparing for all of my AP exams next week, along with my cousin's first birthday and my dad's 40th birthday. I also had my DECA officer interview for the 2020-2021 school year. Anyways, Alex still swung nearly everyday this week (with the tracker), but I did...

Alrighty! As of now I have collected data from 50 swings for middle and inside balls and I have moved onto middle and outside balls. Below is the completed graphs for middle of the zone and middle and in, as well as all of the data collected (as of April 26, 2020) combined.
